Rustic and Vintage Venues
With a trend that embraces the old and the new, rustic and vintage wedding venues have seen an increase in popularity. The opportunities for interesting photographs are abundant, with a distinct contrast between the sometimes-perceived ugliness of old, rusted objects, and the fresh, newness of a bridal gown. The following are some of the best rustic and vintage wedding venues New Zealand has to offer brides and grooms:
The Woolshed, Tipapa Estate, Tipapa, North Canterbury
What could be more rustic than an old woolshed that has seen thousands of sheep cross its threshold, only to leave minus their woolly coat? The aged wood, the bare floors and the rustic beams all help to create a truly unique vintage feel and look. This is a wonderful place to say, ‘I Do’, with exciting and interesting backdrops for great wedding photography. In beautiful North Canterbury, this is a popular venue with those couples that like the rustic, vintage feel of The Woolshed and the rest of Tipapa Estate.
Sudbury, Peka, Wellington
Home to horses, wooden fences and sprawling paddocks and trees as far as the eye can see, Sudbury offers country charm at its best. As if those things don’t offer enough choice for photographs there is a beautiful beach to capture some great shots on. The ceremony can be conducted in a number of enchanting spots around the property, with fine dining in the Stables, followed by dancing or relaxing near the huge outside fireplace. For any couple with an appreciation for horses and country life, Sudbury is an ideal venue to hold a wedding to remember.
The Barn, L’Orangerie, Welcome Bay, Tauranga
A family-owned property, L’Orangerie has been generously offered to couples to hold their wedding ceremony and reception. The Old Barn has been carefully refurbished with lots of vintage items and details, providing both a great backdrop for photographs and also a unique and interesting facility to provide dinner and dancing for the bridal party and guests. The gardens and grounds are a joy for guests to take a leisurely stroll through while photographs are being taken, before moving into the Barn to continue the celebrations.
The Loft, Tarureka Estate, Featherston
This is rustic on two levels – literally. This two storied building provides a rustic environment on the ground level suitable to conduct the marriage ceremony surrounded by aged wood beams and rustic and vintage décor. Once the vows have been exchanged and the couple has ‘tied the knot’ guests, and the bridal party can move upstairs into the loft area to dine and toast the newly married couple. For winter weddings the large open fireplace provides ample warmth. Limited accommodation is available in the nearby Homestead, as well as providing photographic opportunities on the front porch.
Boutique Barn, Puhoi
Red painted native kauri wood barns, and acres of rural backdrops provide couples with many great locations in which to say their ‘I Do’s’ as well as capture all those special moments of a wedding on camera. With smaller, boutique weddings in mind (up to 50 people) the Boutique Barn location offers rusticity at its best, with stunning chandeliers to bring sparkle and magic to a couple’s special day. A specially prepared bridal suite is available for the newly married couple, to stay overnight and enjoy waking to the countryside and all the smells and sounds that make rural New Zealand a magnificent place start married life together.
Criffel Station Woolshed, Wanaka
Criffel offers two locations for a wedding ceremony and reception to be held: the Criffel Woolshed and the Stone House Terrace. The Woolshed is geared to couples looking for a unique, rustic facility in which to exchange vows. Whether the ceremony is conducted inside the authentic woolshed itself, or outside with the magnificent mountains and trees as a backdrop, Criffel Station is a wonderful place to tie the knot and have all the special moments of the day captured by a camera to enjoy for years to come. The Stone House Terrace offers stunning views as a backdrop for the ceremony, and a marquee can be erected on the landscaped lawn for the reception if desired. Guests can enjoy the warmth of the fire pit and outdoor seating on cooler evenings.
